- TASTING NOTE: "This flint-struck wine from Samantha Connew pushes all my buttons. It's chalky and fruit-pure with wisps of struck-match that slowly make their way through the ripe stone and citrus fruits. This is followed by a swell of soft spice, crushed stone, meadow flowers and almond paste. It's tautly stretched, dry and savoury, with a long, linear draw across the palate. Finishes focused and true with background tones of grilled hazelnut, crème fraîche and soft spice." 96 Points - Dave Brookes, Halliday
- ABOUT THE WINE: "The 2024 Stargazer Chardonnay includes fruit from my Palisander vineyard in the Coal River Valley as well as fruit sourced from Bernard Brain's vineyard at Ouse in the Derwent Valley and the Marengo vineyard just outside of Richmond. The Palisander vineyard Chardonnay was planted in 2017 and is a combination of clones 76, 95, 96 and 548, all but the latter on own roots. This block is south facing and is primarily brown dermosol on Jurassic dolerite. Whole bunch pressed and transferred directly to oak for ferment in Mercurey French oak puncheons (500L), 20% of which were new. 100% malolactic fermentation." Stargazer

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Samantha (Sam) Connew has racked up a series of exceptional achievements, commencing with bachelor of law and bachelor of arts degrees, majoring in political science and English literature, from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ, then deciding her future direction by obtaining a postgraduate diploma of oenology and viticulture from Lincoln University, Canterbury, NZ. Sam moved to Australia, undertaking the Advanced Wine Assessment course at the Australian Wine Research Institute in 2000, being chosen as a scholar at the '02 Len Evans Tutorial, winning the George Mackey Award for the best wine exported from Australia in '04 and was awarded International Red Wine Maker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge, London in '07. After a highly successful and lengthy position as chief winemaker at Wirra Wirra , Sam moved to Tasmania (via the Hunter Valley) to make the first wines for her own business, something she said she would never do. The emotive name (and label) is in part a tribute to Abel Tasman, the first European to sight Tasmania before proceeding to the South Island of NZ, navigating by the stars. Halliday Wine Companion
