- TASTING NOTE: "The cooler climes of Eden Valley can show many personalities – especially in a longer, slower vintage such as 2023 – and winemaker Samantha Chandra pushes this to the edge with an elegantly restrained interpretation of refined, bare-boned, blue-fruited Shiraz. It’s sourced from the 30-year-old Naimanya Vineyard in Flaxman Valley, the highest Shiraz site in South Australia at 525m above sea level. Unusual sharp notes of gunsmoke, curry leaf and struck flint rise above the blueberry aromas, but the entry is silky and seductive, an easy caress of blueberry, mulberry and dark plum with a faint lick of spice, framed by wild herbs. This is artisan winemaking at its best – packaged with beautifully artistic labels and elegantly waxed bottle necks, and with care taken to do things distinctly and differently. (Drink between 2025-2038)." 96 Points - David Sly, Decanter

ABOUT THE WINE: V23 in Eden Valley began with replenishing amounts of rainfall, followed by a notably late harvest and steady ripening conditions creating expressive, elegant wines. The fruit for this wine was sourced from Christa and Leon Deans’ Naimanya vineyard in Flaxman Valley. Their vineyard is believed to be the highest shiraz site in SA, sitting at an elevation of 525m. The vines were planted in 1991 onto granitic loam soils that were formed from impact with a meteorite.
100% whole bunches were hand-picked and wild fermented to attain the purest expression of the site. Carbonic maceration took place with minimal disturbance during fermentation, followed by four weeks on skins. 25% new French oak was used with the wine maturing on full lees for about a year. Bottling took place on site without filtration or fining and all movements were carried out gently with the use of gravity.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Meet Samantha Chandra, the winemaker behind Setiono, a new project emerging from the Barossa Valley. With a passion for Rhone-style Syrah, Sam’s journey began after her inaugural vintage at Wynns in Coonawarra, where she honed her craft under the mentorship of Sue Hodder. She furthered her winemaking experience at various other Australian wineries, and even overseas in the Napa Valley. These diverse experiences enriched her understanding of terroir, technique, and the artistry of winemaking. In 2021, Sam’s dream materialised as Setiono took shape. A label born from love, dedication, and a commitment to excellence, it promises to redefine Barossa’s vinous landscape. Famelia
