- TASTING NOTE: ""Deep, bold red colour laced with purple; plum pudding, fruitcake and subtle herb aromas, a suggestion of roasting meats, oak not discernible, but the fruit is savoury, mellow and not especially primary. It’s medium-full bodied and the same softly savoury but drying tannins and flavours are present, all consistent with the maker's style. There is a restrained fruit sweetness at its core, and appealing balance in the flavour, bouquet and mouth-feel. Good length and satisfying to drink. - ABOUT THE WINE: Made from grapes sourced from 60 to 140-year-old dry-grown vineyards (most from independent growers) across a range of Barossa soils, altitudes, and micro-climates, Robert O’Callaghan’s Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a true Australian icon. The crafting of the wine embraces traditional techniques in which every step captures the essence of its origin. Starting with optimally ripened, hand-picked fruit, the grapes land in a 19th-century wooden Bagshaw crusher, open fermentation vessel, and, ultimately, the basket press. The wine is aged in seasoned 300-litre French and American oak hogsheads, along with 2500-litre vats, allowing it to develop and evolve over a period of two years. This slow process ensures that the wine attains a remarkable balance, as the oak imparts its subtle influence on the wine, adding the complexity and depth of flavors.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: "Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door pr mail order (Robert O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants and there are 2 retailers in Sydney, and 1 each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter."
