  • ABOUT THE WINE: "Montepulciano is the variety to grow is a less predicable but warming climate: Late ripening so we pick it in the cool autumn months; High acid so it is very stable and can hang out there a while; Thick skins that resist both sun burn and disease; has a great balance with low tannin. This year we gave it some more time but transferring the wine after one year into one of our prized Stockinger foudre for the second year. Large format barrels allow for gentle maturation within their thick 55mm walls without adding more oak characters so the fruit is central to the maturing wine. A dark wine with ripe blue and black fruits, quite savoury as well, some wild herbs and hint of chocolate. Drinks beautifully now but will cellar very well." Ravensworth
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Ravensworth is led by innovative winemaker Bryan Martin, his wife Jocelyn, plus his brother David. Bryan takes an organic approach, eschewing chemicals, preventing soil compaction and allowing the vines to thrive in what he describes as ‘natural forestry principles’. The vineyard comprises 26 varietals, mostly shiraz, riesling and sangiovese with marsanne, roussanne and viognier plus recent plantings of gamay, chardonnay, savagnin, ribolla gialla and nebbiolo. He also sources fruit for Ravensworth’s other labels including the Regional range. In ’20, a winery and cellar were completed, the latter made with straw bales, and filled with large-format oak, Italian amphorae, ceramic eggs and concrete vessels: all expressing Bryan’s desire to experiment and craft minimum-intervention wines with texture. A 2nd generation has come on board with son Lewis starting his wine science studies at CSU in ’22. Halliday
