  • TASTING NOTE: "I took this to dinner with Mum & Dad who only really drink Champagne and Pinot. Mum took one sip and ordered a 6 pack! There's immediacy to this yet it also loves some air and would benefit from a gentle decant or drinking over a few days. Bright and dark at the same time, this Etna Rosso has plenty of mineral verve wrapped around a core of dark, sweet red fruit. The tannin builds, but has a fine edge to it, meaning its drinkable without food. Lovely acid lift keeps you going back for another sip." David Gillman, HWS
  • ABOUT THE WINE: Made from selected Nerello Mascalese grapes grown at different altitudes, between 550 and 800 metres above sea level, and on diverse volcanic soils, with volcanic ash and lava rocks of varying grain size. It is produced exclusively with grapes from old vines with an average age of 100 years. In the cellar, extraction from skins and seeds was minimized with 8-9 days of maceration, and fermentation temperatures never exceeded 26-28 degrees Celsius. Aging took place primarily in large wooden barrels to facilitate the development of tannins, and partly in concrete vats. Passopisciaro
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: In 2000, Andrea Franchetti decided to restore an ancient farmhouse and winery on the slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. The winery is located approximately 1,000 meters above the small village of Passopisciaro in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the volcano's northern slope. His first task was to reclaim the long-abandoned terraced vineyards and plant new ones with a planting density of 12,000 vines per hectare. His arrival on Etna contributed to the rebirth of viticulture on the mountain and the discovery of Etna wines by the international market. At Passopisciaro, Franchetti focuses primarily on the cultivation of Nerello Mascalese in its various terroirs, altitudes, and exposures, in the form of various crus , as well as cultivating several non-native varieties, such as Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and Cesanese d'Affile. Franchetti produces nine different wines, six of which are made from Nerello Mascalese grapes. Passorosso is a luminous wine, made from a blend of this native Etna grape, harvested from different vineyards located at different altitudes and on different soils. After several years of production, Franchetti realized that grapes from different vineyards were producing very different wines, so starting in 2008, he began bottling them separately, giving rise to the phenomenon of Etna's crus. The five crus, or Contrade wines, each from a vineyard located on different lava flows, with different mineral compositions, and at different altitudes. Passopisciaro
