Mewstone Pinot Noir 2023

- TASTING NOTE: "The maritime climate balances the cool southerly latitude. Hand picked, wild fermented with 25% whole-bunch fermentation; 2478 bottles made. Holds its hue well, still enticing, cherry, plum and rippling spices all jostle for attention, and a fulsome palate." 95 Points - Halliday Wine Companion
- ABOUT THE WINE: Grapes grown at Mewstone vineyard were hand-picked on the 9th and 19th of April at an average of 12.5 baumé. They were naturally fermented with 25 percent whole bunch (this varied across the ferments, from zero to 55%). They received minimal pump-overs before being pressed after 21 days. They were matured in French oak (35% new) for ten months. 3096 bottles produced without fining or filtration

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes established Mewstone vineyard on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in 2011. They produce expressive single site wines with a minimum of intervention in the winery. The vineyard is a former cherry orchard and with the new plantings the estate counts 5.2 hectares. The original planting consists mostly of pinot noir with small plantings of chardonnay, and riesling. Jonny is the winemaker in this family venture. He studied winemaking in New Zealand before working in Langhorne Creek (South Australia), Central Otago (NZ), Mornington Peninsula (Victoria), Barolo (Italy), the Hunter Valley (New South Wales) and Okanagan Valley (Canada). Heading home to Tasmania, Jonny worked in various roles within the local wine industry, before settling in as the Assistant Winemaker at Moorilla in Hobart for seven years. Mewstone also makes wines under the Hughes & Hughes label.
