- TASTING NOTE: "Super-spicy Chianti fully focused on licorice root, restrained black cherries, fresh violets and meaty notes. It seems to be a serious effort, with graphite flavors allied to firm, chalky and chewy tannins, crisp acidity and a super-polished finish. Drinkable now, but can hold." 94 Points - JamesSuckling.com

ABOUT THE WINE: Eschewing the modern trend of Chianti Classico's with a higher percentage of Sangiovese, Paolo De Marchi's example is 83% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 2% Syrah. Matured in large oak barrels for 12 months. This is the last vintage completely made Paolo De Marchi before he sold the winery.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: In the 1950s, the father of owner and winemaker Paolo de Marchi purchased the adjoining hamlets of Isole and Olena and their estates in the Tuscan commune of Barberino Val d'Elsa. Paolo entered the business in 1976 and the quality of the estates wines improved rapidly after decades of sharecropping. Di Marchi is one of the regions kings of the Sangiovese grape, at a time when Chianti was a blended wine it was he that stepped out to produce wines that were 100% Sangiovese. The wine, the true embodiment of the word Super Tuscan, is the Cepparello IGT which has gone on to become an iconic wine and a benchmark for the region. The estate also produces stunning Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chianti Classico. Paolo sold the estate in 2022, and plans to focus on the families other winery business in Alto Piedmont, Proprieta-Sperino, which is run by his son Luca.
