- TASTING NOTE: "A blend of sites – mainly Bracken vineyard, but also Springs Hill, both in Blewitt Springs and the Smart vineyard in Clarendon. Also, a mix of ferments, with varying degrees of whole bunch, and some components seeing 169 days on skins. That’s a lot. But it doesn’t play that way. Yes, there are layers of flavour and savoury structure, but the detail is not taxing, with an easy drinkability and general joyousness to it. Cherry, dried, fresh and sour, all red. Warmed spices, caraway, cumin, Sichuan pepper. Dried herbs, oregano, bay, mint. It’s mid-weight, food forward and engaging. " 92+ Points - Marcus Ellis, Halliday
- ABOUT THE WINE: The backbone of our 24’ Grenache is from the Bracken vineyard, a 25% whole bunch fermentation, followed by 8 months in a 2400 litre foudre called ‘Bob’. The Springs Hill & Smart vineyards provided the layers and complexity from a variety of whole bunch (up to 100% foot-stomped small batch) and extended maceration ferments of up to 169 days, which ultimately gave us a blending bench laden with interest and excitement. Parcels were aged in mostly 500 litre seasoned puncheons and 800 litre demi-muids, with a single second use Austrian Stockinger puncheon contributing some lovely structure. IPOS

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Inspired by the eponymous essay on Japanese aesthetics by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows wines are about an immediacy, pleasure and the embrace of what lies in front of our eyes, rather than that which has fallen to the wayside of the past. In essence, Ikigai, or our reason for being. The wines, fine-boned, energetic and floral, are Mediterranean-accented, befitting McLaren Vale and the elevated reaches of Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, from whence much of the fruit is sourced. An emphasis is placed on organic material and a less-is-more approach, without it being a mantra. Halliday Wine Companion
