Hughes & Hughes 'Lees Aged' Chardonnay 2023
Couldn't load pickup availability
- TASTING NOTE: "A Coal River Valley-sourced chardonnay that shows aromas of grapefruit, nectarine, guava and melon fruits with hints of crème fraîche, grilled nuts, almond paste, light vanillin oak, stone and wildflowers. Peachy fruit flows more on the palate, along with a light phenolic textural aspect, fine, lacy acidity and daubs of clotted cream on the exit." 93 Points - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
- ABOUT THE WINE: Fruit from a single vineyard in the Coal River Valley, Brinktop vineyard. Harvested on March 24th at 12.3 Baume. Whole bunch pressed directly to barrel where it was naturally fermented and matured (30% new). It underwent partial malolactic fermentation while lees ageing for ten months. Bottled unfined and filtered.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes established Mewstone vineyard on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in 2011. They produce expressive single site wines with a minimum of intervention in the winery. The vineyard is a former cherry orchard and with the new plantings the estate counts 5.2 hectares. The original planting consists mostly of pinot noir with small plantings of chardonnay, and Riesling. Jonny is the winemaker in this family venture. He studied winemaking in New Zealand before working in Langhorne Creek (South Australia), Central Otago (NZ), Mornington Peninsula (Victoria), Barolo (Italy), the Hunter Valley (New South Wales) and Okanagan Valley (Canada). Heading home to Tasmania, Jonny worked in various roles within the local wine industry, before settling in as the Assistant Winemaker at Moorilla in Hobart for seven years. Mewstone also makes wines under the Hughes & Hughes label.
