  • TASTING NOTE: "There's a brooding, deep, structural quality to all the Eastern Peake wines, and it's absolutely apparent here. It tastes of black cherries, undergrowth, boysenberry, hazelnut and flings of herbs, with a foresty woodiness, too. It's silken to the touch, dry through the finish, persistent and all-round impressive. It's a bit 'backward', too, which isn't a bad thing for a young pinot noir to be. We are in excellent territory here." 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Halliday
  • ABOUT THE WINE: The vines are MV6 clone grown on volcanic grey loam soils over weathered basalt sitting at 430m alt, plantings ranging from 27-40 years. 100% destemmed and naturally fermented in 3000L concrete fermenters. Pump overs twice daily then basket pressed to barriques after about two weeks. Racked from barrel after 11 months. Bottled another six months after that. Unfined and unfiltered. Minimal sulphur used post malo and at bottling.
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Eastern Peake is a small project that evolved from very humble beginnings. Dianne Pym and Norman Latta purchased a property during the late 1970s in the tiny township of Coghills Creek, Western Victoria -  just 25 km north of Ballarat. Their aim was for self sufficiency on the land as they escaped from Melbourne. In 1981 Dianne responded to an ad in the local paper, looking for cool climate sites to grow Pinot Noir. Their property was chosen and under the tutelage of Trevor Mast they began producing high quality Pinot Noir for him to use at Best's Great Western then at Trevor's iconic winery Mount Laghi Ghiran. After 10 years of selling grapes, Norman began making his own wine. With plenty of help from Trevor, Eastern Peake produced it's first vintage in 1995. Winemaking seemed to come naturally to Norman, he listened and acted on great advice received from mentors such as “the vineyard is truly the key to making great wine, the winemaker is just there to help the progression, don’t interfere too much with what you have already.” This hands off approach has always been the philosophy at Eastern Peake. The vineyard shave been farmed with organic practices since 2013 with the shift now happening to biodynamics. Today the wines are made by Norman and Dianne's son Owen. Winemaking is very hands off, as the back of the bottle says - "unfined, unfiltered, untinkered'".
