  • TASTING NOTE: Petalos stands out for the complexity of its floral notes, which are typical of the Mencia grape—field herbs, dried sage, red lavender, violet, pepper tree, and rose. Additional flavors include red plum, sour cherry, and a subtle earthy note at the finish. The grapes mainly come from the family’s high mountain vineyard, where cool nights help preserve a bright acidity that balances the floral and fruit profile. The wine has a soft, rounded texture and a refreshing character, with earthy tannins and a hint of smoky minerals.
  • ABOUT THE WINE: Petalos is Palacios' regional Bierzo wine. Around 80% of the grapes come from the mineral-rich mountain vineyards above Corullón, with the rest from the clay slopes below. Producing Mencia focuses on retaining acidity, (both in the vineyard and the winery). Petalos is made gently, with five days of light pigeage and minimal pumping over. Maceration takes place over 30 days in a cool cellar, followed by about 12 months of aging in large French oak barrels (1-6 years old). The wine undergoes minimal filtration before bottling.
  •  ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Palacios family owns three estates: Alvaro Palacios, a leading Garnacha producer in Priorat; Palacios Remondo in Alfaro, Rioja; and Descendientes de J. Palacios (DJP) in Bierzo. The DJP project began in 1999 when Ricardo and Alvaro Palacios discovered and acquired old plantings of Mencía along the mountain slopes above Corullón, recognizing their heritage significance. The region has a historical tradition of viticulture, dating back 2,000 years. However, it suffered from a Phylloxera epidemic in the late 1800s, and after World War I and World War II, the area was largely abandoned, resulting in the loss of most indigenous vineyards.  Alvaro and Ricardo have been dedicated to restoring indigenous vineyards and propagating invaluable genetic heritage material.
