- TASTING NOTE: The ripeness of the vintage is pronounced; melon, perfume, and orange blossom slowly give way to fresh peach, honeysuckle and apricot. There’s very little overt oak influence on the nose, although it comes across subtly in the background as pie crust and toast. The palate is supple and silky, although there’s abundant mango and citrus character. The minerality is chalky and distinct, a beautiful contrast that layers in with the acid adding both complexity and depth.
- ABOUT THE WINE: Abundant soil moisture from plentiful winter rains meant bountiful growth. Mild summer days with cool nights made for ideal ripening conditions as harvest approached. Aged for 10 months in French oak,
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: One of the icons of New World Wine. Immortalised in the film Bottle Shock, which presented a fictionalised account of the wineries triumph at the 1976 Judgement Of Paris, where it's 1973 Chardonnay outpointed some of the best white Burgundies in a blind tasting. Established in 1882, the winery stopped producing during prohibition. It came under the stewardship of Jim Barrett in the late 1960's and by 1972 wine production had re-commenced. World class Cabernet and Chardonnay are the hallmarks of Chateau Montelena.
