  • TASTING NOTE: "A giant of elegance, energy and finesse, this single-vineyard Fleurie is one of the wines of the vintage in Beaujolais. Staggering concentration on the tightly-packed medium- to full-bodied palate, which is extraordinarily cool and precise for the very warm vintage. The aromas are just beginning to open up, but there are already notes of red roses, pomegranates and cloves. Then the wet stone minerality rolls over you in one great wave at the awe-inspiring finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.98 Points - JamesSuckling.com
  • ABOUT THE WINE: The grapes are all hand-harvested into small crates, which are received in the winery by gravity only in an effort not to bruise and damage the fruit. The clusters are fully destemmed and fermented spontaneously with zero additions. Carbonic or semicarbonic maceration are not practiced at Bachelards and thermovinification is shunned. The wines are carefully nurtured while they find their own path with minimal outside intervention. Unlike in most wineries in Beaujolais, however, the wines spend a significant time on skins, which is followed by a lengthy maturation in French oak of 18 to 24 months. Large format is used for the two wines from Fleurie and the Saint Amour, while the more powerful Moulin-a-Vent goes into barriques and sees some new oak.
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Château des Bachelards vineyard in Fleurie, was created by the Benedictine monks of Cluny around the year 1100. Today it is operated by Alexandra de Vazeilles, who after working in business in the USA for 15 years, shifted courses into wine. Before buying her own estate she trained at Château Latour in Pauillac, at Domaine de Montille in Volnay and at Domaine Roulot in Meursault. Bachelards has holdings in Fleurie (directly surrounding the Chateau), Saint-Amour and Moulin-a-Vent, and is doubly certified in organic and biodynamic viticulture. The vineyards in Fleurie include on of the only Monopoles in Beaujolais, Les Clos des Bachelards from which Alexandra makes her top wine. Vine age in her holdings is between 60-100 years old. Like the viticulture, winemaking is very considered The grapes are harvested by hand in crates, the wine is received by gravity, only indigenous yeasts are used and the maturing process is deliberately long using both new and old oak. Alexandra's wines are a style unique to Beaujolais. They are made without using carbonic maceration and are more akin in style to the great wines of the Cote de Nuits or the Northern Rhone, inky in the glass, smoky on the nose and richly extracted, terroir driven wines. They are built for the long haul, and would be great additions to any cellar program.
