- TASTING NOTE: "From the Springs Hill vineyard in Blewitt Springs, with the '07-planted grenache grown by Gary Whaite. Pale in the glass, this is less effusively spicy than the '23, somewhat coiled, but with more power behind it. A story of vintage. Power is misleading, though, as this is just so refined, rolling through sour red cherries, dried cranberry, fresh bay and advieh spicing – cardamom, cinnamon, rose and cloves – the tannic framework so lacy and just so finely assertive. - ABOUT THE WINE: Springs Hill Vineyard established in 1974 with the Grenache planted in 2007. Ironstone conglomerate mixed with sand and gravel over mottled orange yellow clay at various depths. Part of the North Maslin Sand formation. 200m Altitude. Sitting on a ridge above and benefitting from the orographic lift of McLaren Vale. Facing North on a gentle slope above the Onkaparinga Gorge. Dry grown. Skye Salter, Charlie Seppelt and Gary Whaite grew the Grenache for the 2025 Vintage. 2025 Gary's Vineyard Grenache - Picked 14/2/2025. 14% Whole Bunch. 21 Days on skins pre-ferment, 32 day ferment, 38 days on skins post ferment. 172 days in a sandstone amphora. The 2025 vintage was very dry and warm. Blewitt Springs proximity to the ocean saved it from the worst of the Spring frosts and dry heat that were prevalent during the 2025 South Australian growing season. The resultant wine is fresh and lively for the vintage, the layered tannin for which this vineyard is known is ever present.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: After working in Germany, NZ and most major regions of Australia, Mark Bulman made a name for himself in his native South Australia with over a decade at the Barossa’s Turkey Flat, claiming the Jimmy Watson Trophy in '17. That was with a grenache, the first win for the variety, and it was the result of much experimentation with and affection for the grape. That connection has only grown, with Mark focusing his eponymous label on a celebration of the grape. While launched with a Gigondas (a result of the Jimmy Watson scholarship), the heart of the range is a rosé (grenache, of course) with Eden Valley and Blewitt Springs dry red grenache bottlings first introduced from the ’23 vintage made sans oak and with a lightness of touch.
