- ABOUT THE WINE: Blain-Gagnard's Puligny-Montrachet captures the clarity and precision that define this celebrated commune. Their Puligny-Montrachet fruit comes from several small, well-sited plots, each contributing to the wine's quiet authority and balance. Fermentation occurs in oak barrels, around a quarter of which are new, followed by gentle ageing on lees for up to 18 months. The approach favours texture and length over overt oak or weight. Each vintage shows Puligny's hallmark interplay of citrus, white orchard fruit and a faint floral lift. On the palate, it builds depth through savoury mineral tones and a fine, tapering line of acidity. The result is a wine that speaks of its place: elegant, precise and built for graceful development in bottle.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine, daughter of Jacques Gagnard, to create this estate. He comes originally from Veaugues, close to Sancerre, but met Claudine while studying in Burgundy and rapidly defected. They have now been joined by son Marc-Antonin, who has also taken on one or two of the family vineyards in his own name. The domaine is 60 per cent white by vineyard ownership, but 70 per cent by wine production. The whites are attractively-made wines, good in the medium term but capable of ageing. The village Chassagne-Montrachet has the added bonus of containing a good proportion, up to a third, of premier cru grapes. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
