  • ABOUT THE WINE: Akutain’s Rioja Reserva — a blend of Tempranillo with a touch of Garnacha and Viura — is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and fiberglass tanks, then aged for 35 months in predominantly neutral American oak with a small amount of French barrels. Mid-Ruby in color, this Reserva possesses a beautiful bouquet of ripe berry fruit mixed with notes of dried herbs, tobacco and rose petals. The full-bodied palate displays concentrated flavors of black cherry, cooked-down strawberries and earth balanced by velvety, textured tannins. The finish exhibits enduring depth and complexity. The perfect companion to grilled, roasted or braised meats and game.
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Akutain is a family owned winery from Rioja Alta founded in 1978 by Jose Penagaricano and winemaker Angel Olmos. They only vinify grapes from their own 6.5 ha of vineyards which are managed sustainably with no use of herbicides or chemicals. Their methods are old school Rioja. Each vineyard is vinified separately in stainless steel and fiberglass and the preference is for old American oak for ageing. Sulphur use is minimal, their is no fining or filtration of the wines and no additions or extractions. Only 35-40 thousand bottles are produced per vintage. Akutain is an under the radar gem of the Rioja.
