Adelina Shiraz, Mataro 2022

- TASTING NOTE: "Shiraz is 1902 plantings from Aberfeldy (which is an ex-Wendouree block, sold off in the '70s), and the mataro is from younger, bush-vine plantings at Adelina. Co-fermented and rested in 700L oak barrels. Quite a bit of blue fruit character in this wine, plums, mulberry, blueberry, though it's tempered with cranberry crunch and bolstered with game meat, anise and some eucalyptus lift. The palate and bouquet match with similar descriptions. The wine is set to medium weight with some grunty earthiness to tannin, salted licorice flavours make an appearance, and a bit of amaro character in the mix. Packed with character, very persistent, serious red wine here. Closure: Screw cap. 14.3% alcohol. (Drink by 2035)" 95 Points - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The initial idea behind Adelina was to make wines for family and friends from the Family Estate in Clare, an exercise that was started in the 80s by Will Gardner and later invigorated with his daughter Jen in the late 90s. It was 2001 when Jen met Col McBryde whilst both were studying at University, where a friendship was fostered and within a couple of years their paths were set with the first commercial release of Adelina in 2003. Jen and Col share a varied history in the wine industry, both with PhD's in oenological related fields and working histories in wine spanning the past 30 years, from the northern climes, back to the antipodes. The small vineyard and winery are set on Wendouree Road East in the Springfarm sub-region of Clare, neighbored by some of the most historically relevant winery and vineyards in South Australia, if not Australia. The farm is managed organically with plantings of well established Shiraz (1915), Grenache (1940) and Pedro Ximenez (1915), these, together with recent plantings of Shiraz, Mataro and Malbec, along with a true representation of a field blend, are all Australian Certified Organic and make up the Adelina Estate Wines. The negoce wines are sourced from a select group of grape growers in Clare, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. These comprise of both conventional and organic sites that provide a pedigree of fruit quality deemed to fit the ethos of being able to produce delicious wines that resonate with variety and regional typicity.
