It has been produced since 1972, and it was Juvé & Camps’ first Gran Reserva. To be qualified as a Gran Reserva, cavas must have a secondary fermentation of a minimum of 30 months. Juvé & Camps Gran Reserva however, is aged for an average of 42 months, following the Juvé & Camps trademark of patiently crafting wines of full expression. The grapes are certified organic and hand-harvested from the most expressive vineyard blocks on the estates; Espiells and Mediona, in the heart of the Penedès region (Barcelona, Spain). The most distinctive trait of Juvé & Camps Gran Reserva is its bright aromas after so many years of ageing. Hints of white flowers and stone fruit are followedby notes of a long-aged cava: brioche, toasted flavors, spices, and honey. The tiny, abundant bubbles that rise up in streams to form a consistent crown. The Chardonnay contributes to the creamy mouthfeel and the Xarello to the elegance and long finish. Exquisitely balanced, this dry cava is expressive, intense, complex, and fresh, a harmony of endless sensations.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Family owned Juve & Camps can trace it's grape growing history back to 1796, but their first Cava's were not produced till 1921. Additional flavors include red plum, sour cherry, and a subtle earthy note at the finish. The grapes mainly come from the family’s high mountain vineyard, where cool nights help preserve a bright acidity that balances the floral and fruit profile. Around 80% of the grapes come from the mineral-rich mountain vineyards above Corullón, with the rest from the clay slopes below. Producing Mencia focuses on retaining acidity, (both in the vineyard and the winery). Petalos is made gently, with five days of light pigeage and minimal pumping over. Maceration takes place over 30 days in a cool cellar, followed by about 12 months of aging in large French oak barrels (1-6 years old). The DJP project began in 1999 when Ricardo and Alvaro Palacios discovered and acquired old plantings of Mencía along the mountain slopes above Corullón, recognizing their heritage significance. The region has a historical tradition of viticulture, dating back 2,000 years. However, it suffered from a Phylloxera epidemic in the late 1800s, and after World War I and World War II, the area was largely abandoned, resulting in the loss of most indigenous vineyards. Alvaro and Ricardo have been dedicated to restoring indigenous vineyards and propagating invaluable genetic heritage material.

COUNTRY: Spain

REGION: Bierzo

VARIETAL: Mencia

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Descendientes-de-J_-Palacios-Petalos-Mencia-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1756286538
alvear-solera-1927-pedro-ximinez
Alvear 'Solera 1927' Pedro Ximinez

TASTING NOTE: "A naturally sweet wine, of dark dense mahogany colour. Deep rich nose with reminiscent of prunes and chocolate. Sumptuous wine of great intensity, rich concentrated fruit in the mouth with a full, rich, succulence, seemingly unending finish. The right wine to end a meal in a marvellous way, to sip with dessert or topping icecream, fruit-salads and pastries or with blue cheese. It might be a little unusual for the house style or perhaps a slight change, as they are gradually going for softer vinifications; you don’t really need to extract in Priorat, because the wines are powerful enough on their own. It’s still extremely young and has a lactic touch (that blows off with a bit of time in the glass); it was only bottled at the end of May 2022, three months before I tasted it. Even if it’s the second wine here, it’s a wine that needs a little bit of time and improves in the bottle. Having said that, the 2020s feel more open, expressive and approachable than the 2019s, which are more tannic and powerful while the 2020s feel a little more Burgundian if you like. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Laurel so far. After some time in the glass, the aromatics of the Syrah (which was perhaps a little more this year, some 12% versus 8% in 2019) made an appearance—violets, smoked bacon. While studying law in Paris in her 20s, Daphne first discovered fine wine while working as the office manager for Kit Stevens MW. What was simply a job to make ends meet would soon become her advocation. Shortly after taking the job with Kit, she met René Barbier and Álvaro Palacios, who were both so passionate about a place called the Priorat that she decided she needed to visit and see it for herself. In her early vintages, Daphne relied on her friends René Barbier and Álvaro Palacios for advice, but guided by her instincts and her training in Burgundy, where she first discovered wine, her wines have evolved to become some of the most sought-after references for the Priorat – and along the way, some of the most desired wines in the world. Despite having received multiple 100 point scores from top critics, Daphne has kept Clos i Terrasses modest in size and has not dramatically increased her production of Clos Erasmus, preferring to create a second, equally expressive wine, Laurel.

COUNTRY: Spain

REGION: Catalonia

SUB-REGION: Priorat

VARIETAL: Grenache 73%, Syrah 12%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Daphne Glorian

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 15%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Clos-I-Terrasses-Laurel-Grenache-Blend-2020-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1744016634
artomana-xarmant-txakoli-de-alava-2024
Artomana 'Xarmant' Txakoli de Alava 2024

TASTING NOTE: Instant Txakoli on the nose! Toro's most important pioneers, having cofounded Bodega Numanthia-Termes with Jorge Ordóñez in 1997. Numanthia was the first exhaustive fine wine project to resuscitate Toro since before phylloxera. Toro is one of Spain's most historic winemaking regions. Tempranillo originated in the Duero Valley, and many ampelographers believe that it originated in Toro, where it is known as Tinta de Toro. These ancient clones of Tempranillo were responsible for Toro being celebrated as Spain's finest winemaking region during the Middle Ages. Toro was also Spain's only region to completely resist phylloxera due to its sandy soils. Part of what has been proposed as the Western Sonsierra zone (by Alberto Gil and Antonio Remesal Villar in Rioja: Vinos Silenciosos), these venerable sites lie at the heart of Rioja’s grower-producer genesis in the late 19th century. Key to the quality includes the patrimony of old-vine Tempranillo (no less than 60 years old in this cuvée) and excellent limestone calcário soils at altitudes up to 600 metres. In the right hands, these historic terroirs imbue their wines with aromatic intensity and great structure for longevity. The wine ferments naturally in concrete vats before aging for 18 months in (mostly) low-toast Radoux French oak barriques. In recent vintages, 10% of the wine has also been raised in low-toast Caucasus oak, further lessening the wine’s already minimal wood influence. Following aging in barrel, the wine is transferred back to cool concrete vats to settle for a further 24 months before release. Luis and Carmen find the wine clarifies so well in concrete that there is no need to fine or filter it before bottling. “We seek wines with aromatic volume, wines that shine not out of weight but of perfume,” explains Luis Valentín. Bibendum

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The estate's story was established in the late 1990s when Rioja Alta natives Luis Valentín (Valen) and Carmen Enciso (ciso) left outstanding careers at Rioja icon Bodegas Palacio. The vineyards and cellar are in the far north of Rioja Alta, in the village of Ollauri, four kilometres from Haro. Ollauri’s Atlantic-influenced vineyards are noted for their excellent limestone soils and altitudes of up to 610 metres. As well as Ollauri, the domaine farms vines in nearby villages Briones, Haro, Rodezno, Gimileo, Zarratón and Villalba, all with calcareous soils at altitudes from 480 to over 600 metres. Vine age is significant; the average is about 30 years, rising to 60 for the Reserva and up to 100 years for Rioja Blanco. Alión owns a total of 70 hectares of land. There is a great diversity of soils in Alión due to the three sedimentary environments that have shaped its landscape: fluvial, colluvial and wind. The fluvial environment is the most significant due to its extent and it is formed by the materials provided by the River Duero which has deposited alluvial over thousands of years. The lower and middle terraces of the Alión soil were formed in this context.

COUNTRY: Spain

REGION: Ribera del Duero

VARIETAL: Tempranillo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Gonzalo Inturriaga

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

TASTING NOTE: "A textured Priorat showing some serious, chalky tannins, which are tightly knitted to the fruit. The property was acquired in October 1997 by Charlotte and Christopher Cannan on the recommendation of René Barbier, owner of the famous Clos Mogador estate and founder of the “new wave” Priorat movement during the late 1980s. An initial purchase of approximately 10 hectares of abandoned terraces was followed by a further acquisition in 2000 to complete the 18-hectare estate. The original vineyard had a small plot planted with old Carignan vines. The rest has been replanted with Grenache, Syrah, a very small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, and Viognier. Later, it was expanded with a second purchase that included around 2,500 old Carignan and Grenache vines, some of which are over 60 years old. The final blend, with the different grape varieties, is chosen by Anne-Joséphine and Christopher Cannan with the advice of Alain Graillot (internationally recognized for his crozes-hermitage wines that he makes in the northern Rhône Valley).

COUNTRY: Spain

REGION: Priorat

VARIETAL: Grenache, Carignan

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Anne Cannan

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 15.5%

SIZE: 750ml
