This is Swinney’s fourth straight Mourvèdre bottling, and the wine is basking in the spotlight. The Mourvèdre is drawn from dry-grown bush vines on Wilsons Pool Vineyard, planted in the early 2000s on rich, gravelly-loam soils. The fruit was picked by hand when flavour and tannin were perfectly ripe, then sorted berry by berry and transferred via gravity to a single stainless-steel fermenter. It fermented with 18% whole bunches to highlight the variety’s “distinctive ferrous qualities, fine structure and wild spice.” The new vintage spent 11 days on skins before being pressed to fine-grained large-format French oak, where it matured for 11 months. Speaking to the sheer, visceral originality of this wine, Mann says that “there’s something of Swinney here that no one can replicate.” Enigmatic, maybe, but also very true. Bibendum

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Swinney family have been farming their property in Frankland River for 100 years. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. Bush vines litter the property. The first cuttings were taken from the adjacent Moss Wood vineyard. The original dry grown 8 acres, planted between 1973 and 1976, has expanded over time to 26 acres of organic vineyards on prime classic rolling Wilyabrup landscape. The classic sandy loams over ancient gravelly red/brown loam over clay are especially suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Margaret River’s remarkable “Gin Gin” clone Chardonnay. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are also grown. For much of the 1990’s the fruit was sold to nearby wineries, however in 1999 production under the Woodlands name began once in again. Since 2002 David Watson’s son Stuart has been the full time winemaker. His highly intuitive and laissez faire approach to winemaking, together with a superb vineyard site, has resulted in a flurry of interest from the media and fine wine collectors particularly for the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. A new long-term contract with the same owner as the Volnay Caillerets brought Leroux back to his old stomping ground in 2017 and so, once again he is working with the same iron-rich red clay soils that he did, so famously, at Comte Armand. Shiraz was picked (hand-picked and selective harvester) then de-stemmed into a combination of open fermenters, maintaining a high proportion of whole berries. We chill the fruit at the destemmer to allow for a few days of cold soaking prior to fermentation. One parcel was selected based on stem ripeness to be kept separate for 100% whole bunch fermentation. Fermenters were pumped over or plunged by hand once or twice a day. As soon as primary fermentation was complete the wine was then pressed to large format oak foudres (2500 and 3000L) and 500/600L barrels. This is cool climate viticulture at its best. The vines are planted on a north/westerly facing slope for maximum exposure to sunlight. Vine age at time of harvest is 28 years. The vines are dry grown, cane pruned and handpicked, which in turn encourages low yields. In the winery the grapes are 75% destemmed, 25% whole fermented in small open fermenters. The must is given around four days for pre-fermentation maceration and fermented using a range of yeasts. The fermentation takes around 21 days to complete. Post ferment the must is pressed using an airbag press and then settled for two weeks before being racked to barrel. In barrel full malo-lactic fermentation is carried out. This wine is then matured for 10 months on lees in new to four-year-old, small French oak barriques.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Pemberton based Picardy is owned and operated by Bill, Sandra and Dan Pannell. The Massolino family are the largest holders in this Cru with 3.5 hectares of Vigna Rionda vines, aged between 40 and 50 years old. On some of the oldest soils of Barolo, there is very little topsoil here, with a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other mineral elements. The altitude is also 300 metres above sea level—so, high—with protection from northerly winds and frost provided by the south/southwest aspect. It’s a vineyard that generates wines with an optimum balance of perfume, finesse, concentration and structure, rarely found elsewhere in Barolo. Excellent acidity and tannins are a feature of the wines of Vigna Rionda, and so they require longer aging in both botti and bottle. That’s why Massolino’s Vigna Rionda is always released with a minimum six years of age.

Always aged in large cask, 2017 was the second vintage that Massolino’s Vigna Rionda was also fermented in large wood. It spent 20 days on skins and then 30 months aging in a 7,000-litre Stockinger botti. It’s simply a gorgeous, layered and complex Barolo of the highest order. The note below says it all. Despite the warm vintage, there is great acidity and ample, fine tannins. Already a brilliant drink, it will be even better in three to five years.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Founded in 1896 by the enterprising Giovanni Massolino—he was the first to bring electricity to the town—the estate is based in and around the town of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the prime sub-zones of Barolo. Today, the keys of this historical estate belong to Franco and Roberto Massolino who work with gifted, ex-Vajra winemaker Giovanni Angeli. Behind Massolino’s rise to the apex of Barolo lies their remarkable collections of Serralunga vineyards, including choice parcels of such famous sites as; Margheria, Parafada and the legendary Vigna Rionda where the Massolino family is the largest holders with 3.5 hectares of vines (two are planted to Nebbiolo) between 40 and 50 years old. Outside of this commune, Massolino also tends vines in the great Parussi Cru of Castiglione Falletto. Massolino’s Barolos sit comfortably among the finest of the region—they are wines of wonderful purity and elegance. The quality strides at this estate over the last decade or so have been truly remarkable with significant advances made, particularly in the vineyards. The Massolino Estate has now been organic for six years with no herbicides used for ten. The evolution of the work in the vineyards over that time has been impressive and is showing through in the wines. The team has introduced more competition through grass cover, and no systemic chemicals are used: only copper and sulphur against mildew and only ‘sexual confusion’ to combat pests. Today the Nebbiolo-based wines of Massolino sit comfortably among the finest of the region—they are wines of wonderful purity and elegance. In one sense they are ‘traditional’ and yet they offer the best of the “old” and “new” worlds: pure, aromatic, textural, deeply flavoured wines that are at the same time precise, vibrant and distinctly regional. Equally important, Massolino’s Barolos are remarkably well priced when compared to the other top producers of the area. Alongside Massolino’s Barolo, we must reserve a good deal of excitement for their early drinking releases that starts with the delicious Dolcetto and runs seamlessly through the Barbera, to basic Nebbiolo before arriving at the top tier wines.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Barolo

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Giovanni Angeli

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Massolino-Vigna-Rionda-Barolo-Riserva-2017-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730194225
vietti-ravera-barolo-2019
Vietti 'Ravera' Barolo 2019

TASTING NOTE: "The 2019 Barolo Ravera is the most intensely mineral and saline of the Barolos. Altitude around 400 m asl; the average age of the vines is 34 years and there is a density of around 4500 plants per hectare over a total area of around 2.1 hectares. The oldest part was planted in 1935. Grapes harvested by hand on 14 October 2019. After gentle pressing, the juice fermented for around four to five weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. This period included pre- and post-ferment maceration, involving the traditional submerged-cap method. Slow malolactic fermentation in barrels, finishing in late spring. The wine then spent over a year on the lees without racking. Ageing is for around 32 months in large oak barrels.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Although they have been making wine for four generations, the turning point came in the 1960's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions – from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione – 1961), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) made him one of the modern pioneers of the region. His legacy was taken up by hi son Luca Currado and his wife Elena. Today Vietti is the only estate in Piedmont to own vineyards in all eleven of the Barolo-producing villages with any of the parcels located in the region’s most historic and pedigreed sites. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues to today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales. The wines under Bruno were firmly in the modernist camp of production, but the influence of his children has seen large format and neutral oak, and longer, slower ferments come into play. The resulting wines are more classic but the retention of some barrique also gives a nod to the past and the splicing of the two philosophies is perfectly handled. Today the wines are some of the most elegant, gorgeous examples coming out of Barbaresco.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Barbaresco

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Bruno & Francesco Rocca

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Bruno-Rocca-Fralu-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2021-Magnum-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1736240616
graci-etna-rosso-2023
Graci Etna Rosso 2023

TASTING NOTE: "Wickedly fresh and floral, the 2023 Etna Rosso is bursting with violet and lavender tones, chalk dust and ripe wild strawberry fruit. The vines, with a density between 6,000 and 10,000 plants per hectare, are between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level, part of which are ungrafted. Graci uses only indigenous grapes: Nerello Mascalese, Carricante and Catarratto with a great attention to sustainability. Cultivation of vineyards is certified organic, with careful selections and search for full maturity, limiting the yields in the vineyard to a minimum. The approach in the winery is rigorous, in search of precision and finesse. Vinification and aging take place in concrete tanks, in stainless steel, in tini and large barrels produced with very long seasoned wood. All the work is aimed at favoring the personality of the vines, keeping intact the differences and nuances between one vintage and the other, in the belief that only by satisfying and respecting the natural expression of a great territory can wines have the potential to truly evoke emotion.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Sicily

SUB-REGION: Etna

VARIETAL: Nerello Mascalese

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Alberto Graci

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14%

SIZE: 750ml

TASTING NOTE: “Beautifully poised, cool expression of shiraz with concentrated but elegant dark cherry fruit and a subtle overlay of spice. It’s crafted from a draconian selection of dry-grown bush-vine bunches on the same kidney-shaped patch of dirt as the vines for the Farvie Grenache in the Wilson’s Pool Vineyard. The vines here face northeast on leaner topsoil and with a higher percentage of coarse lateritic gravel; the roots have now made it down into the clay beneath. Meticulous fruit-thinning and selective hand-harvesting over multiple passes ensures Swinney achieves fruit that is as close to perfect as possible. As was the case in 2022, bunches and berries were small, requiring a moderation in the use of whole bunches in the ferment. Where this wine can sometimes be 100%, the proportion was a well-integrated 66% this year. According to Mann, the Farvie Mourvèdre works beautifully with stem inclusion. “It helps to balance the wildness, gaminess and rustiness of the fruit while accentuating the spice element of the wine.” The wine spent 11 days on skins before being pressed to large, fine-grained, seasoned French oak vessels, where it matured for 10 months. It’s the wildest, most intoxicating of the three Farvie wines, compared evocatively by the maker to a deep dive into a 600-page novel.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Swinney family have been farming their property in Frankland River for 100 years. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. Bush vines litter the property. But, inspired by the great wines of France and Spain—and believing that Grenache could do well in a region already building a reputation for high-quality Syrah—Matt Swinney ignored the experts (who said Grenache would never ripen in the cool climate of Frankland River) and planted the region’s first bush-vine Grenache vineyard. He did so with mass-selection cuttings provided by David Hohnen and gave his new vines pride of place on the site’s hilltops. Take a walk through Swinney’s untrellised Grenache bush vines, and things change about halfway down the block planted in 2004 on the estate’s upper northeast-facing hillside crest. The soil gets leaner and shallower, with more gravel and a higher clay content. “That’s Farvie,” says Rob Mann. This fruit is different, too; it is more ferrous and mineral with fine, velvety tannins and so much complexity. Vines are picked over multiple passes, with only the best bunches from each vine—those sitting in the dappled light of the vine’s architecture—set aside for Farvie. The bunches are berry sorted, then gravity-fed to French oak for natural fermentation, incorporating 30% bunches. Small bunches and berries in 2023 resulted in fruit of intense colour and concentration, so this year, the wine is 100% Grenache (previous releases have included small amounts of Mourvèdre). The wine spent 11 days on skins before being pressed to large, fine-grained, seasoned French oak vessels, where it matured for 10 months. Rob Mann was happily surprised with the depth of colour in this year’s release: “The bunches were loose, and the berries were small in 2023, so the colour is this amazing deep purple. It’s a freak of a wine,” he told us, “but a very exciting one.”

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Swinney family have been farming their property in Frankland River for 100 years. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. Bush vines litter the property. Only a selected soil area in the Wilson’s Pool and Powderbark blocks is earmarked for Farvie Syrah, with the vines fostered to nourish and balance the fruit to optimum levels, allowing for dry farming. The 2023 Farvie was hand-harvested from a parcel of vines planted to Jack Mann’s heritage mass-selection Syrah. In the relatively cooler conditions of 2023, the wine is marked by a distinct Szechuan pepper, Cornas-like spice and structure, according to Mann. The fruit was sorted berry by berry in the winery, and again, in response to the cooler conditions, the bunch component was kept at a well-judged 55% (warmer years have seen up to 65% inclusion), to highlight the wine’s lightness of texture while also encouraging bright, spicy aromatics. Everything was gravity-fed to a French oak vat and demi-muids for wild fermentation. The wine spent 15 days on skins before being pressed to large, fine-grained, seasoned French oak, where it rested for 10 months before bottling. Mann fosters the Farvie plot’s innate savoury, ironstone and ferrous character, pushing it to take a lead role in the wine. Importantly, no new oak is used in the Farvie Syrah. “I’m more interested in perfume, florals and personality than I am in the wine having heavy density and richness,” he explains. “By using no new oak, you have to think a bit harder about how to build complexity, structure and perfume in Syrah,” he goes on. “We build that complexity through viticulture, bunches and time on lees.”

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Swinney family have been farming their property in Frankland River for 100 years. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. Bush vines litter the property. This year’s blend includes fruit from, among others, Castelli-Knight Ranch, Griffins Lair, Walker Vine Hill, Nellessen, Morris Ranch and Russell Ranch. The Castelli fruit brings high-tone spice and power; Nellessen provides nerve and acidity; the coastal Griffin’s Lair lends complexity and saline tang; Walker Vine Hill adds cool, slow-ripened detail; and the Morris Ranch and Russell Ranch sites round things out with deep fruit and vibrant acidity. The key difference between this bottling and the Sonoma Coast wines is that the vineyard components may be sourced from anywhere within Sonoma up to the rolling hills of northern Mendocino County. So, it’s a true north-coast Californian expression of Syrah that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Fermented with 100% whole bunches, the wine ages for 10 months in neutral French oak puncheons and is bottled unfiltered. According to its maker, the 2022 is “just gorgeous, and probably the best North Coast we’ve made”. Like all of this producer’s Syrah, it is a compelling argument for how singular and delicious northern Californian Syrah can be. Bibendum

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Sommelier and wine buyer Pax Mahle fell hard for the Syrah's of the north coast of California while working for prestigious epicurean purveyor Dean & DeLuca. Drawing on his many visits to the northern Rhône, he wanted to make wines his heroes would be proud of. To this end, Sonoma Coast's cool, foggy AVAs provided the perfect combination of terroir and grape. Initially, Pax leased nearly all his vineyards to ensure they were farmed to his high standards. Roll on 20 years, and the vineyards Pax sources from are independently owned by small, like-minded growers and are farmed organically, although certification is not deemed necessary. Pax spends a lot of time in these vineyards and is involved in every aspect of decision-making regarding his fruit. Although his rich, powerful expressions of Syrah put him on the map, by 2006, Pax had recalibrated his style towards fresher, lower-alcohol profiles and began working with new vineyard sources in cooler, coastal areas of Sonoma. Within a tiered classification approach, the cream of the crop is designated Hillsides. The single-vineyard wines follow, then the North Coast and Sonoma Coast blends. In the cellar, Pax plays Syrah with a straight bat: 100% whole clusters crushed by foot. Nothing that could change the natural environment of the winery is permitted, so no commercial yeasts are used. He adds more stems in cooler vintages to buttress the Syrah and provide textural richness. He never destems unless necessary (he has a very expensive destemmer in his winery that’s been used twice in 10 years!). Full of tone and sinew, these wines not only express a purity of fruit and expression of place you seldom encounter, but they are also impressively structured and balanced. Bibendum

COUNTRY: USA

REGION: California

SUB-REGION: Sonoma

VARIETAL: Shiraz

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Pax Mahle

CLASSIFICATION: Minimal Intervention, Unfined & Unfiltered, Sustainable Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Pax-Wines-North-Coast-Syrah-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730366115
teutonic-bergspitze-pinot-noir-2021
Teutonic 'Bergspitze' Pinot Noir 2021

ABOUT THE WINE: Bald Peak in the Chehalem Mountains sub-AVA is the Willamette Valley’s highest point. The Laurel Vineyard sits atop Bald Peak at a lofty 381 metres and was originally planted to Pinot Noir in 1981 by owner John Albin for use in his sparkling and rosé programme. When Barnaby Tuttle first approached John to purchase fruit to make the first Bergspitze (mountaintop in German) Pinot Noir in 2009, many considered it a foolish endeavour. Surely the site was too cool and the fruit too lean? Again, Barnaby proved his detractors wrong, crafting an elegant and ethereal Pinot Noir that instantly made waves in the restaurant scene and quickly sold out. In Barney’s words: “It went viral”. It wasn’t just the lofty elevation that drew Barnaby to the Laurel vineyard. The Pinot Noir clone is the Alsatian Coury, brought to the region from Alsace in a suitcase by Charles Coury in 1965. The soils are loamy and volcanic, rich in nutrients and with a unique ability to regulate temperature. The site is dry-farmed and managed organically. As is the norm at Teutonic, the fruit was left on the vine for as long as possible before being handpicked, sorted, destemmed and fermented in open-top vessels using a pied de cuve started in the vineyard. After three weeks with daily punch-downs, the wine was pressed and settled before going to old barrels for maturation. Sitting at a subtle and restrained 12%, the 2021 bursts with bright fruits and elegant, age worthy structure. Bibendum

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Blame it on the Mosel. Many working in the wine trade will point to one, two, maybe three wines as their lightbulb moment, but for Barnaby Tuttle, it was a tasting of 14 crystalline, mineral-driven German Rieslings. To say he was inspired would be an understatement: Tuttle listed every single wine for the restaurant where he worked. Yet Tuttle’s epiphany would have further-reaching ramifications than his new wine list. He spent the next few years meeting as many winemakers as possible, peppering them with questions to shore up his scientific knowledge. He planted a test vineyard at his house and made wine as a hobby. He made pilgrimages to the Mosel to learn from those growers who had inspired him. In 2005, the opportunity arose for Barnaby and his wife, Olga, to plant a vineyard on their friend’s farm just outside the AVA boundary of the Willamette Valley on the eastern flank of the Coast Range. They jumped in with both feet and, come 2008, Barnaby and Olga had quit their day jobs to set up Teutonic wines. Today, they work with several cool, old-vine, dry-farmed, high-elevation sites throughout the Willamette Valley and beyond, making fresh, linear, lithe single-vineyard wines that speak clearly of site, soil and season. Unlike many in Oregon, and the Willamette Valley in particular, Barnaby and Olga are not constrained by boundaries. They work with many great sites that fall outside the nested AVAs and—in the case of Alsea—even the Willamette Valley boundary itself. “There are so many great vineyards and terroirs labelled as Willamette Valley or even just Oregon,” he says. But if the climate is right, every soil has a story to tell, and I see it as my responsibility to tell the story of that soil, of that site. It’s the vineyard that’s the story at the end of the day.” Everything at Teutonic begins and ends with the site: first in finding, then farming and finally in gently guiding and developing the singular character of each vineyard and variety into the bottle. Working with passionate and dedicated growers, all of Teutonic’s sources are cool-climate, dry-grown sites farmed either sustainably or organically by dedicated growers. They search for balanced crops with maximum hang time―Barnaby picks incredibly late compared to some of his colleagues―to allow for slower ripening thereby building more complexity at lower sugar levels and higher acidities. Vineyard yeasts kick-start each fermentation—Tuttle uses a pied de cuve to further instill site-specific biology in the wines. The soils vary, but many vineyards lie on Bellpine soils—a variant of the Willamette Valley’s famous Jory soils—which are rich in iron and have excellent drainage. In the cellar, it’s all about shepherding the quality of the fruit into the bottle. Save for a little sulphur, nothing is added. And it should go without saying that no new wood is allowed to distort the purity of these wild-fermented wines, which are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The range of white wines includes Riesling, Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Blanc, with mainly Pinot Noir and Meunier for the reds, which are bottled in Alsatian flutes in keeping with Teutonic’s Germanic inspiration. Bibendum

COUNTRY: USA

REGION: Oregon

SUB-REGION: Willamette Valley

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Barnaby & Olga Tuttle

CLASSIFICATION: Minimal Intervention, Unfined & Unfiltered, Minimal Sulphites, Organic Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 12.16%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Teutonic-Bergspitze-Pinot-Noir-2021-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730366120
roc-breia-pinot-noir-2022-magnum
Roc Breia Pinot Noir 2022 Magnum

TASTING NOTE: “Théo Dancer's 2022 Pinot Noir is rather deep and muscular this year, opening in the glass with aromas of plummy fruit and sweet spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and primary palate framed by sweet, powdery tannins. The wines are results from a selection of the finest barrels, with Dancer eliminating anything he doesn’t like from the final blend.

COUNTRY: France

REGION: Burgundy

SUB-REGION: Macconais

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir

WINE STYLE: White Wine

WINEMAKER: Theo Dancer

CLASSIFICATION: Minimal Intervention, Unfined & Unfiltered, Minimal Sulphites, Sustainable Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13%

SIZE: 1500ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Roc-Breia-Pinot-Noir-2022-Magnum-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop_56726833.jpg?v=1741599252
mayer-sangiovese-2024
Mayer Sangiovese 2024

TASTING NOTE: "From the De Bortoli vineyard in Dixons Creek and planted in '98 when winemaker Timo Mayer was still working there. 100% whole bunches, no new oak. The Pinot Meunier vines were planted in 1985 by Mark Debose and Jan O’Banion on their 17-hectare vineyard, which at the time was already planted to Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Approximately 40% of the vines on the property are over 40 years old, and all are on their own roots. Like Alsea vineyard, Borgo Pass is home to Bellpine soils—a variant of the famous Jory soils found in the Willamette Valley—which are rich in iron and have excellent drainage. The dry-farmed site sits at 140 metres elevation and is organically managed. The fruit was handpicked, sorted, destemmed and fermented in open-top vessels using a pied de cuve started in the vineyard. After four weeks with daily punch-downs, the wine was pressed and settled before going to old barrels for maturation. A lover of great food as well as wine, Barnaby Tuttle made this wine with game in mind. Full of brambly fruits and spice, it will shine even brighter paired with the right wild bird. Pheasant would be a fabulous place to start.

ABV%:

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Teutonic-Borgo-Pass-Vineyard-Pinot-Meunier-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730280380
praeter-langhe-nebbiolo-2020
Praeter Langhe Nebbiolo 2020

TASTING NOTE: "Super delicious example of Nebbiolo. Praeter is a wine’s story, miles and years from home… Matt Large is a busy man, but at the core of his pursuit is his own brand, Praeter, the name of which is a nod to the idea that wine is an extension and amplification of the expression of nature. Matt is an intuitive winemaker, always seeking to create precise and sensitive wines that clearly express a sense of place, while employing best-practice sustainable viticulture. This talent was recognised early in his career and led to a relatively rapid ascension through the winemaking ranks. Having previously worked as Assistant Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Shadowfax Winery – across their Macedon Ranges sites – Matt has recently accepted a role as senior winemaker at Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle Vineyard under Adam Wadewitz. For a long time, Matt had a desire to work in Piedmont and grasp the intricacies of the vineyards, as well as learn the traditional techniques of Barolo and Barbaresco. Enter Peter Johns, who introduced Matt to ex-Bruno Giacosa winemaker Francesco Versio in 2017, creating a watershed moment in the development of the Praeter brand. Matt worked vintage with Francesco in 2017 at Figli Luigi Oddero in La Morra and was asked to take on a permanent Assistant Vintage Winemaker role – a position he still holds today. Using fruit from Luigi Oddero’s vineyards, Matt also made his first wine there, the 2017 Vino Rosso. After that first vintage stint, in 2018 Matt managed to secure a parcel of Nebbiolo from the Malakoff vineyard in Victoria, and the Praeter offering was fleshed out a little more. From 2020, Matt released a trio of reds, including a Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and Vino Rosso IGT and he has rounded this off with the release in 2022 of his first Chinato, an adventurous new project from this dynamic young winemaker.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Matt Large

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Praeter-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2020-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop_9503becc.jpg?v=1740906201
vigne-marina-coppi-sant-andrea-barbera-2022
Vigne Marina Coppi 'Sant' Andrea' Barbera 2022

TASTING NOTE: "Gorgeous wine here. The soils in the region are known as Marl of Sant'Agata, and is made up of 30% sand, 55% clay and 15% limestone. This complex soil, plus the high diurnal range of the area provides condition to produce wines with outstanding elegance and finesse.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Colli Tortonesi

VARIETAL: Barbera

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Francesco Bellocchio

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Vigne-Marina-Coppi-Sant-Andrea-Barbera-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop_3481fb69.jpg?v=1741770294
pietraventosa-allegoria-primitivo-2021
Pietraventosa 'Allegoria' Primitivo 2021

TASTING NOTE: "Never been a big fan of Primitivo, or Zinfandel for that matter, but this wine shows the grape in a different light. There are six parcels in total, including the lieux-dits of Montiottes Basses and Quartier Marei Bas (also home to the 1910-planted Vieilles Vignes parcel). The smallest holdings are those in the Quatorze-Journaux and Baudes-Saint-Martin—two parcels at the bottom of the slope which sandwich Etienne Grivot’s vines. La Plante L’Abbé is at the top of the Clos, near the château and the Grands-Échezeaux border. All these sites are now pushing an average 70 years of age and have been managed organically for well over 20 years. So Vieilles Vignes by any other name! As for all the reds here, this was fermented with roughly 50% bunches in old concrete vats. It was then aged in barrels which were fashioned, according to the season, by renowned Burgundian cooper Stéphane Chassin. The percentage of new oak for this wine currently hovers between 30% and 50%. Like all Labet’s Château de la Tour wines, this was bottled unfiltered.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Hype or no hype, today Château de la Tour is one of the top producers of the Côte de Nuits and arguably the benchmark domaine of the Clos de Vougeot. But it hasn’t been an overnight success story. This grower has been making outstanding red Burgundies since at least the 1950s. Yet there is no doubt that since 2010 the already high quality of this producer’s wines has risen sharply, and in the last few vintages, it has gone through the roof.

Of course, quality is a given from such a producer. The domaine is the largest holder in the Clos (with 5.5 hectares), meaning it controls a significant proportion of the finest vines—mainly on the upper slopes of the clos surrounding the Château, just below Musigny. Château de la Tour’s Vieilles Vignes are the oldest in the Clos and include one plot (approximately one hectare) of ancient vines planted in 1910. Even the so-called ‘younger vines’ have an average age of over 65 years. The viticulture has been organic for over 20 years, so the soils around these vines could hardly be more dynamic and healthier. One of the most significant advantages working in this producer’s favour is the winery’s proximity to the vines—located in the Clos itself, this is only one of two buildings within the walls of this 50-hectare Grand Cru vineyard. These factors, combined with the immensely talented team’s precise winemaking, result in exceptional, classic wines of what the French might term great breeding. An intensely knowledgeable and passionate grower, François Labet has been the driving force behind the domaine since 1984. Although Château de la Tour is steeped in history, it is also renowned for its ability to adapt within the confines of its relentless pursuit of quality. Those following the wines will not have missed the evolution towards a more nuanced, approachable style being produced here. There are many small factors behind this positive change. The appointment of the talented Sylvain Pataille to assist in both vineyard and winemaking decisions could be considered the catalyst. Of course, the climate has also been shifting and bringing more flesh to wines across the Côte. Another more recent factor is Labet’s son Edouard, who has now entered the picture. He is revising ideas and practices and working on the biodynamic side (supporting the organic viticulture that was incepted here as far back as 1992). Further, from 2019, even the Domaine’s once traditional and exclusive use of whole bunches has been recalibrated, alongside plans to reflect on the use of new oak. The Cuvée Classique is drawn predominantly from the domaine’s vines on the mid-slope of the Clos but also from plots on the lower and upper parts of the vineyard. There are six parcels in total, including the lieux-dits of Montiottes Basses, Quatorze-Journaux and Quartier Marei Bas. Château de La Tour’s emblematic Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from a selection of the oldest vines in the Clos, mostly planted in 1910 and situated right in the heart of the vineyard. These ancient vines yield only two to three tiny bunches per vine in a good year. The net result is a Clos de Vougeot of unique intensity, breadth of flavour, complexity and structural power. In the most favourable years, the domaine bottles a third cuvée, the Hommage à Jean Morin. This ultra-rare wine, named after François’ grandfather, is produced exclusively from the oldest vines in the Clos, utilising only the first bunch on the first shoot of each vine. Bibendum

COUNTRY: France

REGION: Burgundy

SUB-REGION: Cote de Nuits

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: François & Edouard Labet

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Chateau-De-La-Tour-Cuvee-Classique-Clos-Vougeot-Grand-Cru-2021-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730280575
chateau-de-la-tour-vielles-vignes-clos-vougeot-grand-cru-2021
Chateau De La Tour 'Vielles Vignes' Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2021

TASTING NOTE: Five-star wine “A slightly richer purple colour than the classic cuvée. Our other 7.5-hectare vineyard was then planted in 1998 primarily with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also some small plantings of Gewurztraminer and Nebbiolo, all on a north facing slope, in Leongatha's hinterland, increasing our overall area of vines to just over 10 hectares. Our wines reflect our vines and their terroir, which is enhanced by our close planted, low cropping, old vines with only the use of natural processes and sprays, no irrigation and meticulous canopy management, culminating to produce wines of depth, length and complexity. Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones handcrafted tiny quantities of superlative pinot noir which, at its best, had no equal in Australia. One of Australia’s greatest small producers, it's been heading down a new path since Jones sold the assets (winery, stock and 14ha of vineyards) in May '20 to a syndicate led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier (who has known Jones for 14 years) and 2 Singaporeans who already have lucrative wine businesses. Halliday

COUNTRY: Australia

REGION: Gippsland, Victoria

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Jean-Marie Fourrier

CLASSIFICATION: Unfined & Unfiltered, Sustainable Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Bass-Phillip-Estate-Pinot-Noir-2023-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1758272774
gerard-raphet-chambolle-musigny-2022
Gerard Raphet Chambolle Musigny 2022

TASTING NOTE: "This is a bright, juicy and red-fruited village Gevrey-Chambertin. Read any pundits thoughts after tasting these wines and you can feel the genuine surprise and excitement about how wonderful the wines are. Quality appears very good to excellent across the board with the warm weather delivering lovely ripe, concentrated fruit and the timely rains giving the wines the requisite freshness and tension to buffer. It's clear that while these are wines that typify modern Burgundy, where succulent fruit takes the stage early on making them hard to resist, yet the structure sits under the hood in the best wines allowing them to age marvelously. This style seems to play right into the hands at Raphet, a Domaine whose wines are typified by bright and vivid fruit, intoxicating perfumes and just a sense of ethereal beauty. Pair that with the subtle changes seen since Gerard's daughter Marion has been handed the winemaking and viticulture keys, more density and a refinement of tannins to name a few, and you have the perfect storm for what is one of our most loved Burgundy imports. Make no mistake this is an estate whose star continues to rise, and while style here remains a constant, everything is now getting dialled in and turned up to a level where the wines not only grab your attention, but command it. The key to Raphet's success has always been built on their vineyard holdings. Their Bourgogne Rouge for example is drawn from lieux-dits surrounded by Grand Cru vineyards, their Gevrey Chambertin is from a plot sliced out of Charmes-Chambertin, with vines creeping up to 100 years old. Their Morey St Denis combines fruit from two 1er cru sites, Clos des Ormes and Les Millandes, and yet is labelled, and priced, at the village level. Clos Vougeot is a vineyard where location can be the difference between transcendent and mediocre, and the Raphet's have a brilliant old vine parcel and make one of the finest wines you will see from this site. With fruit from these stellar holdings at her disposal Marion, who pairs her lifelong experience at Gerard's side with an Oenology degree, is showing she is the final piece of the puzzle for this already much adored estate.

COUNTRY: France

REGION: Burgundy

SUB-REGION: Cote de Nuits

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Marion & Gerard Raphet

CLASSIFICATION: Unfined & Unfiltered, Sustainable Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Gerard-Raphet-Chambolle-Musigny-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop_6db4d505.jpg?v=1741599413
