The Massolino family are the largest holders in this Cru with 3.5 hectares of Vigna Rionda vines, aged between 40 and 50 years old. On some of the oldest soils of Barolo, there is very little topsoil here, with a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other mineral elements. The altitude is also 300 metres above sea level—so, high—with protection from northerly winds and frost provided by the south/southwest aspect. It’s a vineyard that generates wines with an optimum balance of perfume, finesse, concentration and structure, rarely found elsewhere in Barolo. Excellent acidity and tannins are a feature of the wines of Vigna Rionda, and so they require longer aging in both botti and bottle. That’s why Massolino’s Vigna Rionda is always released with a minimum six years of age.

Always aged in large cask, 2017 was the second vintage that Massolino’s Vigna Rionda was also fermented in large wood. It spent 20 days on skins and then 30 months aging in a 7,000-litre Stockinger botti. It’s simply a gorgeous, layered and complex Barolo of the highest order. The note below says it all. Despite the warm vintage, there is great acidity and ample, fine tannins. Already a brilliant drink, it will be even better in three to five years.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Founded in 1896 by the enterprising Giovanni Massolino—he was the first to bring electricity to the town—the estate is based in and around the town of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the prime sub-zones of Barolo. Today, the keys of this historical estate belong to Franco and Roberto Massolino who work with gifted, ex-Vajra winemaker Giovanni Angeli. Behind Massolino’s rise to the apex of Barolo lies their remarkable collections of Serralunga vineyards, including choice parcels of such famous sites as; Margheria, Parafada and the legendary Vigna Rionda where the Massolino family is the largest holders with 3.5 hectares of vines (two are planted to Nebbiolo) between 40 and 50 years old. Outside of this commune, Massolino also tends vines in the great Parussi Cru of Castiglione Falletto. Massolino’s Barolos sit comfortably among the finest of the region—they are wines of wonderful purity and elegance. The quality strides at this estate over the last decade or so have been truly remarkable with significant advances made, particularly in the vineyards. The Massolino Estate has now been organic for six years with no herbicides used for ten. The evolution of the work in the vineyards over that time has been impressive and is showing through in the wines. The team has introduced more competition through grass cover, and no systemic chemicals are used: only copper and sulphur against mildew and only ‘sexual confusion’ to combat pests. Today the Nebbiolo-based wines of Massolino sit comfortably among the finest of the region—they are wines of wonderful purity and elegance. In one sense they are ‘traditional’ and yet they offer the best of the “old” and “new” worlds: pure, aromatic, textural, deeply flavoured wines that are at the same time precise, vibrant and distinctly regional. Equally important, Massolino’s Barolos are remarkably well priced when compared to the other top producers of the area. Alongside Massolino’s Barolo, we must reserve a good deal of excitement for their early drinking releases that starts with the delicious Dolcetto and runs seamlessly through the Barbera, to basic Nebbiolo before arriving at the top tier wines.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Barolo

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Giovanni Angeli

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Massolino-Vigna-Rionda-Barolo-Riserva-2017-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1730194225
vietti-ravera-barolo-2019
Vietti 'Ravera' Barolo 2019

TASTING NOTE: "The 2019 Barolo Ravera is the most intensely mineral and saline of the Barolos. Limestone- and clay-rich soil with Marls of Saint Agatha present. Ravera in Novello is a fabulous hillside vineyard with a western/south-western exposure. Altitude around 400 m asl; the average age of the vines is 34 years and there is a density of around 4500 plants per hectare over a total area of around 2.1 hectares. The oldest part was planted in 1935. Grapes harvested by hand on 14 October 2019. After gentle pressing, the juice fermented for around four to five weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. This period included pre- and post-ferment maceration, involving the traditional submerged-cap method. Slow malolactic fermentation in barrels, finishing in late spring. The wine then spent over a year on the lees without racking. Ageing is for around 32 months in large oak barrels.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Although they have been making wine for four generations, the turning point came in the 1960's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions – from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione – 1961), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) made him one of the modern pioneers of the region. His legacy was taken up by hi son Luca Currado and his wife Elena. Today Vietti is the only estate in Piedmont to own vineyards in all eleven of the Barolo-producing villages with any of the parcels located in the region’s most historic and pedigreed sites. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues to today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales. The wines under Bruno were firmly in the modernist camp of production, but the influence of his children has seen large format and neutral oak, and longer, slower ferments come into play. The resulting wines are more classic but the retention of some barrique also gives a nod to the past and the splicing of the two philosophies is perfectly handled. Today the wines are some of the most elegant, gorgeous examples coming out of Barbaresco.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Barbaresco

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Bruno & Francesco Rocca

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Bruno-Rocca-Fralu-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2021-Magnum-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1736240616
praeter-langhe-nebbiolo-2020
Praeter Langhe Nebbiolo 2020

TASTING NOTE: "Super delicious example of Nebbiolo. Praeter is a wine’s story, miles and years from home… Matt Large is a busy man, but at the core of his pursuit is his own brand, Praeter, the name of which is a nod to the idea that wine is an extension and amplification of the expression of nature. Matt is an intuitive winemaker, always seeking to create precise and sensitive wines that clearly express a sense of place, while employing best-practice sustainable viticulture. This talent was recognised early in his career and led to a relatively rapid ascension through the winemaking ranks. Having previously worked as Assistant Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Shadowfax Winery – across their Macedon Ranges sites – Matt has recently accepted a role as senior winemaker at Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle Vineyard under Adam Wadewitz. For a long time, Matt had a desire to work in Piedmont and grasp the intricacies of the vineyards, as well as learn the traditional techniques of Barolo and Barbaresco. Enter Peter Johns, who introduced Matt to ex-Bruno Giacosa winemaker Francesco Versio in 2017, creating a watershed moment in the development of the Praeter brand. Matt worked vintage with Francesco in 2017 at Figli Luigi Oddero in La Morra and was asked to take on a permanent Assistant Vintage Winemaker role – a position he still holds today. Using fruit from Luigi Oddero’s vineyards, Matt also made his first wine there, the 2017 Vino Rosso. After that first vintage stint, in 2018 Matt managed to secure a parcel of Nebbiolo from the Malakoff vineyard in Victoria, and the Praeter offering was fleshed out a little more. From 2020, Matt released a trio of reds, including a Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and Vino Rosso IGT and he has rounded this off with the release in 2022 of his first Chinato, an adventurous new project from this dynamic young winemaker.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Matt Large

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Praeter-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2020-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop_9503becc.jpg?v=1740906201
cascina-roccalini-barbaresco-2019
Cascina Roccalini Barbaresco 2019

TASTING NOTE: Pronounced floral notes of rose and violet, accompanied by red cherry, raspberry, tobacco, and leather. In the cellar, the aim is to achieve the purest expression of the Nebbiolo grape.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piemonte

SUB-REGION: Barbaresco

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Paolo Veglio

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming, Biodynamic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Cascina-Roccalini-Barbaresco-2019-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1728378315
sandrone-valmaggiore-nebbiolo-dalba-2022
Sandrone 'Valmaggiore' Nebbiolo d'Alba 2022

TASTING NOTE: "The 2022 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is quite the surprise, given the challenging conditions of the year. Luciano Sandrone foresaw this potential when he planted Nebbiolo in Valmaggiore 30 years ago, carefully selecting the most promising aspects of the site. The vineyard is extremely steep, situated on sandy soil, and is planted at a high density of 8,000 vines per hectare, allowing for competition among the vines that enhances their quality. Fermentation occurs in tanks, followed by malolactic conversion and maturation in old French demi-muids, with aging lasting 9 to 12 months.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The winemaking tradition of the Sandrone family began in the 1970s. Every stage of production is carried out with a commitment to sustainability and the utmost respect for the environment, starting with meticulous vineyard design to minimize the need for chemicals. Long famed for its potent, expressive Barbarescos and Barolos, which in characteristic Barbaresco style can often age for decades, Roagna is one of the old guards of producers, making modern and balanced versions of full, tannic wines that marked this region for so much of the 20th century.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Luca Roagna

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Roagna-Paje-Barbaresco-2018-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1758272837
paolo-scavino-langhe-nebbiolo-2023
Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo 2023

TASTING NOTE: "Scavino's 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is laced with hints of kirsch, orange zest, white pepper, mint and dried herbs. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, (representing the fourth generation) run the family Estate today. Enrico started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was just 10 years old. Enrico straddles the modernist/traditionalist styles of Barolo, utilising native yeasts and favouring shorter macerations, but only using neutral barriques for the initial ageing period (10 months -to set colour) before transferring his wines to old large format oak for 12 months. Quality control is crucial. Scavino could make more wine—but the estate chooses to sell off from 10-30% of the production in bulk to maintain their super high standards. This small family farm—which essentially started with 5.5 hectares—now manages 29 hectares of vineyards, and regularly finds itself classified amongst the other top estates of the region.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piemonte

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Enrico Scavino

CLOSURE: Screwcap

ABV%: 14%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Paolo-Scavino-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2023-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1758272842
vietti-barolo-2021
Vietti Barolo 2021

TASTING NOTE: "The 2021 Barolo Castiglione is a superb entry-level Barolo from Vietti. The average age of the Guyot-cultivated vines is between 10 and 45 years old, with a density of about 4,500 plants per hectare. The soil is rich in limestone and clay. Each individual cru is vinified and aged separately and in different ways to bring out the characteristics of each “terroir”. The grapes are harvested by hand. After gentle pressing, the juice ferments for around 3 - 4 weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. This period includes pre and post-fermentation maceration, involving around 30 months in large barrels and, for a small portion, barriques. Vietti

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Luigi’s son, Giampaolo, recently took the reins at the estate in the 1990's, overseeing the cellars while his brother, Romolo, and his father continue to maintain the vineyards. The first Barolo under their own label was produced only as recently as 1993, but since then, the family has racked up accolades and high scores from the worldwide press. Pira’s holdings include the three most prestigious crus in the Serralunga commune: “Margheria,” “Marenca,” and “Vigna Rionda.” Once firmly in the modernist camp of Barolo producers, recent vintages have seen both barrique and botte put to use in the winery. Vineyard management is guided by organic principals and only small amounts of sulphur are used.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Giampaolo Pira

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Luigi-Pira-Marenca-Barolo-2021-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1762938352
ls-merchants-nebbiolo-2023
LS Merchants Nebbiolo 2023

ABOUT THE WINE: Our second hit at Nebbiolo, and a paradoxical grape at that… Big and brooding with healthy doses of tannins and an earthy undercurrent, but as pale coloured as a pinot! Dylan Arvidson was born in Blenheim NZ, raised in Geelong VIC and moved to Margaret River in 2009 after being offered a job at Juniper Estate. He realised early on that although his favourite variety to drink and make is Chardonnay, his passion lay in finding obscure varieties or fruit not typically well known in our region and making it into the best possible example of that variety.

COUNTRY: Australia

REGION: Adelaide Hills, South Australia

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Rose Wine

WINEMAKER: Matt Large

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Praeter-Stolen-Moments-Rosato-2024-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1772010459
piero-benevelli-langhe-nebbiolo-2023
Piero Benevelli Langhe Nebbiolo 2023

TASTING NOTE: "Massimo's Langhe Nebbiolo offers a fragrant and perfumed expression of Nebbiolo from Monforte. Vinified and raised in stainless steel tanks.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Due to its challenging climate and terrain, Valtellina was once regarded as the last frontier of Italian viticulture. Tucked up in the northern pocket of Lombardy hugging the Swiss border, Valtellina has come a long way in a short period of time and is steadily shaking off the ‘Piedmont’s poor cousin’ label. The wines here have carved a path entirely their own. Although the Valtellina Valley is only a 2.5hr drive from Milan, it’s surprisingly isolated and is often spoken about as being the least explored wine region in the country. To the north are the imposing Swiss Alps, and to the south is the Orobie Bergamo National Park. The valley runs from East to West split down the middle by the Adda River and is broken up into 5 subzones. At the eastern end of the valley in the zone of Valgella, near the town of Teglio is where you will find the tiny Estate of Sandro Fay.
Like many producers in this region, Sandro Fay focuses on Chiavennasca (named after the nearby town of Chiavenna) – the region’s specialty and their unique expression of Nebbiolo. In recent times, global pressures have encouraged Valtellina producers to re-label their wines as Nebbiolo – a shame! Almost all of Fay’s wines come from the Valgella zone which gets a little tempering influence from Lake Como, resulting in a classic alpine vine growing area when coupled with the fact that their vineyards range between 400m and 800m. It’s also worth noting that the soil breakdown here is almost the opposite to the Langhe with literally no traces of clay or limestone. Here, it is mostly primary rock and sand which proves to work well with their climate and choice of vines. Sandro Fay first commercially produced wine back in 1973, but in recent times, his son Marco (winemaker) and daughter Elena (sales & marketing) have taken over the reins, so it’s truly a family managed Estate.
Although the region is regarded as one of the most challenging in Italy to make quality wine, Fay are highly regarded and produce an array of wonderfully food orientated wines that show vitality, racy acidity, salty minerals, and lingering fine tannins. Maybe the closest Nebbiolo comes to Pinot Noir? Importer Notes

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Lombardy

SUB-REGION: Valtellina

VARIETAL: Chiavennasca

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Marco Fay

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 12.5%

SIZE: 750ml
