At the heart of the Classico zone is the Pieropan property, which dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards (including Pigno, Becco, Boiolo, Tondo, Palestrello and La Santa) and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively. Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Veneto

SUB-REGION: Soave

VARIETAL: Garganega, Trebbiano di Soave

WINE STYLE: White Wine

WINEMAKER: Andrea & Dario Pieropan

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Screwcap

ABV%: 12%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/P1260023_a1a3e65f-dbf9-4be2-81c2-e039e97d530e.jpg?v=1781581453
isole-e-olena-chianti-classico-2022
Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2022

TASTING NOTE: "The 2022 Chianti Classico is an elegant, gracious wine. Paolo entered the business in 1976 and the quality of the estates wines improved rapidly after decades of sharecropping. Di Marchi is one of the regions kings of the Sangiovese grape, at a time when Chianti was a blended wine it was he that stepped out to produce wines that were 100% Sangiovese. The wine, the true embodiment of the word Super Tuscan, is the Cepparello IGT which has gone on to become an iconic wine and a benchmark for the region. The estate also produces stunning Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chianti Classico. The Massolino family are the largest holders in this Cru with 3.5 hectares of Vigna Rionda vines, aged between 40 and 50 years old. On some of the oldest soils of Barolo, there is very little topsoil here, with a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other mineral elements. The altitude is also 300 metres above sea level—so, high—with protection from northerly winds and frost provided by the south/southwest aspect. It’s a vineyard that generates wines with an optimum balance of perfume, finesse, concentration and structure, rarely found elsewhere in Barolo. Excellent acidity and tannins are a feature of the wines of Vigna Rionda, and so they require longer aging in both botti and bottle. That’s why Massolino’s Vigna Rionda is always released with a minimum six years of age.

Always aged in large cask, 2017 was the second vintage that Massolino’s Vigna Rionda was also fermented in large wood. It spent 20 days on skins and then 30 months aging in a 7,000-litre Stockinger botti. It’s simply a gorgeous, layered and complex Barolo of the highest order. The note below says it all. Despite the warm vintage, there is great acidity and ample, fine tannins. Already a brilliant drink, it will be even better in three to five years.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Founded in 1896 by the enterprising Giovanni Massolino—he was the first to bring electricity to the town—the estate is based in and around the town of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the prime sub-zones of Barolo. Limestone- and clay-rich soil with Marls of Saint Agatha present. Ravera in Novello is a fabulous hillside vineyard with a western/south-western exposure. Altitude around 400 m asl; the average age of the vines is 34 years and there is a density of around 4500 plants per hectare over a total area of around 2.1 hectares. The oldest part was planted in 1935. Grapes harvested by hand on 14 October 2019. After gentle pressing, the juice fermented for around four to five weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. This period included pre- and post-ferment maceration, involving the traditional submerged-cap method. Slow malolactic fermentation in barrels, finishing in late spring. The wine then spent over a year on the lees without racking. Ageing is for around 32 months in large oak barrels.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Although they have been making wine for four generations, the turning point came in the 1960's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions – from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione – 1961), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) made him one of the modern pioneers of the region. His legacy was taken up by hi son Luca Currado and his wife Elena. Today Vietti is the only estate in Piedmont to own vineyards in all eleven of the Barolo-producing villages with any of the parcels located in the region’s most historic and pedigreed sites. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues to today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales. The wines under Bruno were firmly in the modernist camp of production, but the influence of his children has seen large format and neutral oak, and longer, slower ferments come into play. The resulting wines are more classic but the retention of some barrique also gives a nod to the past and the splicing of the two philosophies is perfectly handled. Today the wines are some of the most elegant, gorgeous examples coming out of Barbaresco.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Barbaresco

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Bruno & Francesco Rocca

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Bruno-Rocca-Fralu-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2021-Magnum-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1736240616
graci-etna-rosso-2023
Graci Etna Rosso 2023

TASTING NOTE: "Wickedly fresh and floral, the 2023 Etna Rosso is bursting with violet and lavender tones, chalk dust and ripe wild strawberry fruit. Praeter is a wine’s story, miles and years from home… Matt Large is a busy man, but at the core of his pursuit is his own brand, Praeter, the name of which is a nod to the idea that wine is an extension and amplification of the expression of nature. Matt is an intuitive winemaker, always seeking to create precise and sensitive wines that clearly express a sense of place, while employing best-practice sustainable viticulture. This talent was recognised early in his career and led to a relatively rapid ascension through the winemaking ranks. Having previously worked as Assistant Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Shadowfax Winery – across their Macedon Ranges sites – Matt has recently accepted a role as senior winemaker at Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle Vineyard under Adam Wadewitz. For a long time, Matt had a desire to work in Piedmont and grasp the intricacies of the vineyards, as well as learn the traditional techniques of Barolo and Barbaresco. Enter Peter Johns, who introduced Matt to ex-Bruno Giacosa winemaker Francesco Versio in 2017, creating a watershed moment in the development of the Praeter brand. Matt worked vintage with Francesco in 2017 at Figli Luigi Oddero in La Morra and was asked to take on a permanent Assistant Vintage Winemaker role – a position he still holds today. Using fruit from Luigi Oddero’s vineyards, Matt also made his first wine there, the 2017 Vino Rosso. After that first vintage stint, in 2018 Matt managed to secure a parcel of Nebbiolo from the Malakoff vineyard in Victoria, and the Praeter offering was fleshed out a little more. From 2020, Matt released a trio of reds, including a Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and Vino Rosso IGT and he has rounded this off with the release in 2022 of his first Chinato, an adventurous new project from this dynamic young winemaker.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Matt Large

CLASSIFICATION: Sustainable Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 14.5%

SIZE: 750ml

TASTING NOTE: "Gorgeous wine here. Nicola Bergaglio were one of the first known wineries in the now designated area to produce their own wines, not just sell their grapes off. Gianluigi was joined by his son Diego who is now the winemaker, and though both are quiet achievers, preferring to let the wines speak for themselves, it is evident that they are very proud of what they do. Cortese the grape is indigenous to this area and has not scientifically been linked to any other grape variety in the world, it is truly regional. Most of the 3000 hectares of the grape are planted around the town of Gavi in the south east of Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, along the Lemme river. Vines are planted on hills with calcareous soil composition like most parts of Piedmont. Some of the very best sites are owned by the Bergaglios who organically farm their estates. On their hills, there is a constant breeze, generated either by the Ligurian Sea or from the Alps and nature parks to the north and west. This creates a constant shift in day and night time temperatures which helps to create an elegant and harmonious play of fruit and higher acidity in the grapes that are grown here. The Bergaglios believe in crus and site expression and pick and vinify their grapes separately into 2 unique wines. Their single vineyard Minaia site is considered by all to be one of the best in the entire region. Importer notes

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piedmont

SUB-REGION: Gavi di Gavi

VARIETAL: Cortese

WINE STYLE: White Wine

WINEMAKER: Nicola Bergaglio

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 13%

SIZE: 750ml

TASTING NOTE: The Rèis Timorasso sits on the rich end of the white wine spectrum. The bunches of grapes, which are carefully selected, are collected into boxes and subsequently come to the fruit loft “fruttaio” where they start the long, natural drying process known as ‘appassimento’. The drying promotes the concentration of sugars and lasts around 3 months. Between January and February the grapes are pressed and then fermentation happens in stainless steal vats at controlled temperatures. This lasts for about 30 – 40 days with daily “rimontaggio” (the resubmerging of the grapes that have floated to the top of the container). The maturing of the wine occurs in wooden casks for 3 years until the bottling, which is then followed by 2 months of aging in the bottle. Coffele

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Coffele is a historical family-run winery in the medieval town of Soave since 1928. A region defined by extreme weather, incredibly varied soil structures created from the caving in of the volcano tens of thousands of years ago, and the subsequent lava flows of the volcano that is still active today. Couple this with altitudes between 400-1000metres and a 360-degree site aspect circling the slopes of Mount Etna, this is a thought-provoking region. Tenuta Delle Terre Nere released their first vintage in 2002. Marco is considered by many to be the pioneer of Etna on the world map. He was the driving force behind convincing the Italian wine industry and the Ministry of Agriculture to understand the value of officially demarcating Contrada within their wine producing areas. The classification system used was influenced by the Burgundian model. Marco is a big fan of this system and has integrated the model into his own line-up. The Bianco and Rosso represent more geographically generic wines, though TdTN still grow organically and meticulously at this level. Their ‘cru’ wines depict the Contrada or the village they are from and are further elevated with single vineyards he considers to be at ‘grand cru’ level.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Sicily

VARIETAL: 60% Carricante, 25% Catarratto, 10% Grecanico, 5% Minnella

WINE STYLE: White Wine

WINEMAKER: Marco de Grazia

CLASSIFICATION: Minimal Intervention, Unfined & Unfiltered, Organic Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork

ABV%: 12.5%

SIZE: 750ml

TASTING NOTE: A particular specialty of the Valle Isarco. The month of June saw no precipitation and registered several heat spikes. Despite these climatic conditions, the vines did not suffer drought stress due to existing pedoclimatic conditions in Castello della Sala’s vineyards. Rain showers at the beginning of August brought good balance back to both the vines and the fruit allowing the grapes to reach peak ripeness. Layers of morning fog set into the vineyards during the months of October and November and the berries were gradually covered with “noble rot” that concentrated sugar levels and enhanced the grapes’ aromatic complexity. The grape harvest began at the end of October with Traminer, continued with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon and was completed at the end of November with Grechetto. Antinori

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Castello della Sala is Antinori's winery located in the Umbria region, not far from the Tuscan border, about 18 kilometers from the historic city of Orvieto. Castello della Sala is the perfect place for growing white varieties. The vines grow in clay and calcareous based soils, rich in fossil shells, and they are well exposed to the rising of the sun with an excellent difference of temperature between day and night. A judge in Avellino, he kept meticulous records of his activities, including transporting his wines by donkey to the town of Tufo to sell them to local osterie and private clients! Nunziante’s grandson Benito was the first to concentrate on producing high quality wine, and in 1991, the first label of the estate was born. The fourth generation of the Ferrara family, Gabriella Ferrara and husband Sergio are now at the helm. They have 12.5 hectares under vine at 450-600 meters above sea level in calcareous clay soil of volcanic origin, with chunks of yellow sulfur marking the surface of the yellow-tinged soils. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, (representing the fourth generation) run the family Estate today. Enrico started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was just 10 years old. Enrico straddles the modernist/traditionalist styles of Barolo, utilising native yeasts and favouring shorter macerations, but only using neutral barriques for the initial ageing period (10 months -to set colour) before transferring his wines to old large format oak for 12 months. Quality control is crucial. Scavino could make more wine—but the estate chooses to sell off from 10-30% of the production in bulk to maintain their super high standards. This small family farm—which essentially started with 5.5 hectares—now manages 29 hectares of vineyards, and regularly finds itself classified amongst the other top estates of the region.

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Piemonte

VARIETAL: Nebbiolo

WINE STYLE: Red Wine

WINEMAKER: Enrico Scavino

CLOSURE: Screwcap

ABV%: 14%

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Paolo-Scavino-Langhe-Nebbiolo-2023-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1758272842
sandrone-dolcetto-dalba-2024
Sandrone Dolcetto d'Alba 2024

TASTING NOTE: "The 2024 Dolcetto d'Alba is plump, juicy and expressive. The consistent quality of this wine—its purity, silky texture, fine tannins and balance—only comes with perfectly ripe fruit from top sites. In this case, the sites are also high, bringing added freshness to the layers of fruit. From estate vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, Sandrone draws from Castelletto and Cascina Pe Mol. In Novello, there is the Rocche di San Nicola vineyard and the whitish marls of Ravera, whose easterly exposure contributes perfume and aromatic complexity. Joining these sites is fruit from Rivassi and Crosia in the commune of Barolo. Vine age is another key to the quality, averaging over 50 years. Typically, 11 different parcels contribute to the blend, and any fruit that does not make the grade is sold off. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, and the wines age in tank. In short, this is about as close as Dolcetto comes to Nebbiolo-level depth and class. Bibendum

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The winemaking tradition of the Sandrone family began in the 1970s. All the rest is covered by old-century olive trees. Having grown up watching her father make good wine for the region of Abruzzo, it would seem Chiara’s future was set for her, but instead she decided to head to Rome to study law. It wasn’t until her father suffered a severe stroke in 1995 that Chiara found her way back the vines. In 2003, Chiara made the pivotal decision to leave her future as a lawyer behind and take over the family business. At that point she didn’t have so much wine knowledge. Of course, she grew up with winemakers in her family who made good, easy to drink wines of the territory, but these weren’t the wines that would gain attraction outside of their region. Chiara began to apply herself in the vineyard and in the cellar, quickly gaining insight and discovering her palate. She was fortunate to have such important guidance and mentorship from her godfather Doctor D’Amario who had worked alongside her father in the cellar and is still an important part of the operation offering support and lineage into their historical past. Chiara applied herself and dedicated everything to Ciavolich wines. What was first her duty, became her passion, and now is her life’s work. Over the years, Chiara has found her true expression through wine and the Ciavolich range is the result of her contribution to the family cellar. Nowadays, Ciavolich is one of the most notable wine producers in Abruzzo and is found in many of the most important export markets in the world. Chiara’s style walks a beautiful line between fresh, vibrant, and lively, while staying true to the territory, authenticity, and structure of the regional grapes and
what they can achieve

COUNTRY: Italy

REGION: Abruzzo

VARIETAL: Pecorino

WINE STYLE: White Wine

WINEMAKER: Chiara Ciavolich

CLASSIFICATION: Organic Farming, Vegan

CLOSURE: Cork%

ABV%: 12.5

SIZE: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0367/1208/7597/files/Ciavolich-Aries-Pecorino-2022-Heritage-Wine-Store-Perth-CBD-Bottleshop.jpg?v=1767776649
biondi-santi-rosso-di-montalcino-2022
Biondi Santi Rosso di Montalcino 2022

TASTING NOTE: "A super-restrained wine showing complex aromas of rhubarb, strawberries, violets, raspberries and blood oranges. In medieval times, Selvapiana was one of the watch towers along the Sieve river, built to protect the city of Florence to the north-east border. During the Renaissance, it became a summer residence for noble families and Florentine bishops. Francesco Giuntini, who was among the first Tuscan producers to make a Riserva wine from 100% Sangiovese, was born on the estate and with consultant Franco Bernabei grew the estate to prominence. Since 1997 Selvapiana is run by Francesco Giuntini’s adopted sons, Federico and Silvia, sons of his estate manager Franco Masseti, who worked with Francesco from 1953 to 1990. The vineyards primarily face west, though Selvapiana’s prized Bucerchiale vineyard is south-west facing.
